Our Story
The New York Philosophy Club emerged from a merger of a few small salons committed to a simple idea: that philosophy should be public, practiced, and personal.
Drawing on the work of Robert Axelrod, we believe that the key to a strong social fabric is repeated interaction—integrity and cooperation comes from showing up consistently, over time, with others.
To this end, we host hundreds of guests every week to discuss the big questions. We also collaborate on events with notable speakers and cultural centers.
As a public charity, we are 100% supported by donations and our passionate volunteers.
FAQs
Do I need a background in philosophy to participate?
Not at all! Everyone is welcome, no matter your background. Most people who come don’t have formal experience, just curiosity and an interest in good conversations.
How does the discussion work?
Each week we provide a question sheet with a topic and three sets of questions. Each round lasts about 30 minutes, and then we switch groups. The sheets are there to guide you, but you’re free to take the conversation wherever it flows.
Why small groups?
Small groups make it easier for everyone to relax, ask questions, and share their thoughts. It ensures that no one feels lost in a big crowd and everyone gets a chance to participate.
What if I have more questions?
Just reach out—we’d be happy to help!
